EDMONTON, AB (July 23, 2024): NGIF Accelerator, through its Industry Grants program, is pleased to announce a funding contribution of $100,000 to SCFCan Inc. for the development of a system that aims to extract valuable compounds from waste streams, contributing to Canada’s circular economy, where nothing is waste and value is retained as much as possible.
SCFCan Inc. is a Canadian waste-to-resource company that specializes in supercritical fluid extraction technology. Their innovative system recovers valuable compounds from waste streams, such as oil-based drilling fluids from cuttings, using supercritical carbon dioxide, resulting in a more effective and environmentally friendly waste management solution.
The objectives of this project are to field-test the technology at a drilling rig location, running 24/7 at a commercial capacity that matches one rig’s waste generation rate. This demonstration will show that the recovered oil is suitable for direct reuse for drilling operations, as well as demonstrate the economic and environmental performance of SCFCan’s technology.

“We are excited to support SCFCan in their mission to contribute to Canada’s circular economy by valuing waste streams and reducing environmental impacts,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator and Managing Partner of NGIF Cleantech Ventures. “Our Industry Grants program and its focus on de-risking clean technologies through field trials and pilots are part of NGIF’s integrated model of industry validation, customer creation, and technology commercialization.”
“SCFCan is grateful for the support of NGIF Accelerator to move our technology towards commercialization. The unique structure of the Industry Grants program allows early-stage companies like ours to have direct access to engaged customers, which is invaluable in scale-up,” said Christianne Street, President, SCFCan. “SCFCan looks forward to demonstrating the economic and environmental success of our supercritical fluid extraction technology with the overall goal of increasing the sustainability of the natural gas industry.”
“Canadians want and need the affordable, reliable, clean energy service offering they have come to expect from the natural gas industry. When we created NGIF, it was our vision to bring the entire natural gas value chain together to support cleantech development that enhances environmental and economic performance for the sector. I am glad to see our vision in action as NGIF continues to support technologies like SCFCan’s extraction system,” said Timothy M. Egan, President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association and Chair, NGIF Capital Corporation.
Industry Grants’ Participants and Project Partners

About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is industry-led and offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. Each project in the program will accelerate technology readiness level progressions through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.
About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and will operate all technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It will coordinate with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the Emissions Testing Centre program.
About SCFCan
SCFCan‘s core technology uses supercritical carbon dioxide to remove valuable material from waste streams. SCFCan‘s distinct advancement is the ability to process the waste in a fully continuous manner (as opposed to batch operations). SCFCan believes the world’s resources are too precious and too limited to be used only once before being thrown away. Doing so is simply an unsustainable practice in both economic and environmental terms. SCFCan strives to move towards a more circular economy.
About Canadian Gas Association
The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is the voice of Canada’s gas energy delivery industry, including natural gas, renewable natural gas (RNG), and hydrogen. Its members are distribution and transmission companies, equipment manufacturers, suppliers and other service providers. Today, natural gas meets almost 40 per cent of the country’s energy needs.
